As an organization, Patch is built on the idea of strengthening local communities and bringing democracy to life. Our network of websites delivers not only relevant, hyper-local information, but also amplifies the voices of our readers. And with difficult choices facing our elected officials in the coming days and weeks, the need for citizens to speak up and be heard has never been greater.
It is why I am proud to announce that starting this week, Patch is partnering with Starbucks – another staple of the community – on its "Come Together" initiative. Just as Patch serves great content and Starbucks serves delicious coffee, we need Democrats and Republicans to join forces and serve meaningful solutions to the pending financial obstacles our country faces.
Through December 28, Starbucks is asking its store partners (employees) in the Washington D.C. area to write "Come Together" on their customers' cups as a small gesture to celebrate the spirit that has always bridged the differences dividing us.
Patch will be supporting "Come Together" via a unique content experience on patch.com/fixthedebt, and will also be powering this effort through blog posts, social media, online ads and other editorial content across many of our local sites. You can learn more at fixthedebt.org. The goal: to bring the message of collaboration from local communities to Washington and onto the national stage.
This initiative with Starbucks is just the first step in a marathon for both of our brands in serving the people of this country beyond local news and great coffee. Stay tuned for more in the future.

1. What a great idea. However, if you withhold Congress pay check I bet they could figure this out.

3. Having great friendships with friends who work in Congress as well as socialites I am in constant awe of the waste of time and money we spend in our government. These fast friendships we cultivate with our goverment neighboring cities need to put there foot down. Either comply or face the jail time for not oberying the laws.

4. Balancing the budget? depending on your source the Pentagon is between 24% and 43 % of the federal budget, So lets be fair and say its 33% or @ a third of the TOTAL budget. Yet they are seldom if EVER questioned if someone in YOUR household was spending a third of the budget would there not be some questions? we are in a War in Afghanistan . YET i defy anyone to tell me WHY we are there. It appears to me that the country is Owned and Operated by the Military Industrial Complex and these theatrics concerning the budget is nothing more than smoke and mirrors; that in the end will squeeze the last few Nickles out of some pensioners pinch purse.

5. Our problem at the moment is not the debt, that is a distraction from the real issue of more jobs. Europe tried austerity and it has almost brount the end of the European Union. Until the economy is back on its feet, the US needs more stimulus packages that put people back to work, like more money to hire teachers and firefighters, more money to fix our infrastructure and more money for clean energy. if there are cuts to be made they should be made in subsidies to corporations.

7. I am concerned for our childrens future. Debt, private, business and government exceeds 50 trillion dollars today. Type in "Flow of funds" into your browser to find the federal reserve data. Every man, woman and child owes over 147,000 dollars. If interest rates on government bonds would return to historic averages, interest payments on the 16 plus trillion federal government deficit would be, very roughly, 800 billion per year or about $ 2,350.00 for every man woman and child. A lot more for those who pay taxes.
When the worlds wealthy, citizens of the United States, borrow from the poor, citizens in China, to fund fancy cars, second homes, exotic vacations something is wrong. The international financial stresses being created by western debt and reckless monetary policy, that is ultimately being used to fund lives of excess, is unprecedented.
Remember, all debt creates jobs in the short run, but only good debt creates jobs in the long run. Debt that increases production efficiency sufficiently via investment in capital equipment, education and infrastructure is good and has a chance of increasing employment. Debt used to fund entitlement and consumption on non-productivity increasing items is bad in that it will generate no efficiency increases necessary to pay of the increased debt.
